Lumbosacral Belt Use is Not Harmful
Does wearing a lumbosacral orthosis cause trunk muscle
weakness? No. A review of 35 published studies found no effect on muscle
strength in some while others actually showed increased muscle strength. Only
one showed reduced thickness of abdominal muscles. (1) Certainly,
Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries doesn’t want our low back pain patients to rely on the back
belt for longer than necessary, but for the interim care, its use can be
helpful to stabilize the spine - and even remind you to not overdo - while it
heals.
Vitamin D Helps Low Back Pain
A study of chronic low back pain patients with low levels of
vitamin D were supplemented with 60,000 IU a week for 8 weeks. 66% of them
attained normal vitamin D levels. Significant reduction in reported pain by
visual analog scale and significant improvement in functional ability were
noted. (2) Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries is pleased to serve Manchester chiropractic
care to many patients with low back pain, so don’t be surprised if when you are
one of them that we discuss vitamin D and nutrition at some point!
Chiropractic Care vs. Primary Physician Care Prior to Stroke
– No Difference
A new article in the Journal of Cerebrovascular Disease compares
patients less than 45 years old who saw a chiropractor to those who saw a
primary care physician days before they had a stroke. They found that there is
no excess risk of carotid artery stroke after chiropractic care. (3) All
chiropractic spinal care at Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries is carefully applied and monitored after a
thorough Manchester chiropractic
examination is performed.
Disc Herniation - Conservative Care Equals Surgical Care in Long-term
A comparison study of surgical and conservative care
outcomes for lumbar disc herniation and sciatica showed faster relief from
symptoms (at 6 weeks) but no benefit over conservative care at mid-term and
long-term follow up. (4) So if you or a loved one has back pain and/or leg pain
due to disc herniation and want to avoid surgery, Manchester chiropractic
care at Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries is ready to help. Contact Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries today.
