Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide epidemic.. 14%
of the world population has poor
vitamin D levels. (1) One published report states that it
affects 1 billion people worldwide. (2) Low vitamin D status is connected
to a wide range of diseases. Improving
vitamin D levels is beneficial and easy…if vitamin D supplementation is followed.
Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries encourages our Manchester chiropractic patients to check
and improve as necessary their vitamin D levels.
Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries is confident that positive health benefits
will result from this effort.
DISEASES LINKED TO LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS
A widespread vitamin D deficiency is associated
with many diseases. The incidence of cancers like lung, pancreatic,
colorectal, kidney, breast
is associated with low vitamin D levels. Diabetes, rickets, rheumatic
arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer diseases, benign paroxysmal positional
vertigo, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults are too.
(1, 2, 3) Vitamin D plays a key role in calcium
homeostasis, skeletal metabolism, and the function of immune, cardiovascular
and reproductive systems. (2) Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also research-related
to vitamin D status and bone mineral density. (3) Vitamin D3 supplementation is effective in its care. Testing
for the occurrence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in these patients is the test
as to the success of the treatment. (4) Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries
notes that this is interesting as these two conditions are also identified
as being affected by vitamin D status too. Manchester
chiropractic care at Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries benefits Manchester chiropractic
patients with these conditions.
BENEFITS OF IMPROVING VITAMIN D LEVELS
Supplementing those who take antidepressants with vitamin D
is shown to improve the antidepressive effect. Researchers propose
that vitamin D may be beneficial for other such conditions beyond just
depression like schizophrenia, cognitive disturbances, attention deficit
disorder, and autism. (1) Providing a daily equal
dose of vitamin D (1000 units/kg I.P.) to post-surgical back patients on day one through day 21 lessens
symptoms of neuropathic pain. (5) Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries sees how
these benefits are worth the effort our Manchester
chiropractic patients would take on to raise
poor vitamin D levels.
HOW TO RAISE VITAMIN D LEVELS
A study of healthy young women revealed that taking
calcium plus vitamin D (1500 IU) by those with less than 20ng/L or 800 IU of
vitamin D by those with levels of greater than 20
ng/L. Both saw their vitamin D levels increase. The elevation was seen
as early as the first month
of the study for those taking calcium plus vitamin D. A thought-provoking side finding in this study: It is hard
to get people to do what is recommended! Only 67 of the 106
study participants took the recommended
supplements for the 3 months of the
study! (6)
